Getting to the Regional Natural Park of the Gulf of Morbihan

The Regional Natural Park of the Gulf of Morbihan is located in the south of Brittany, in the department of Morbihan (56). This park includes 33 municipalities, including the city of Vannes, prefecture of the department and 517 kilometers of coastal line. It covers 74,600 hectares, it also includes 17,000 hectares of maritime space. It is the 50th regional natural park created in France, by decree of the 1st Minister in October 2014 (for a period of 15 years, renewable).

The Park’s missions are to protect and manage the cultural and natural heritage, develop the territory, welcome and inform visitors, experiment and participate in research programs and finally develop the local economy. The Regional Natural Park of the Gulf of Morbihan is known and recognized for its exceptional cultural and natural wealth that it preserves and enhances by carrying out actions throughout the year.

The emblem of the Park is the speckled seahorse, present in numbers in the past, a species that has become rarer today. This emblem reflects the Park’s desire to preserve and safeguard the biodiversity present in the Park. What to do in the Gulf of Morbihan NRP?

There is plenty to keep you busy in the Gulf of Morbihan NRP. With family or friends, many activities are possible in the PNR of the Gulf of Morbihan. Bird watching, escaping fishing on foot, discovering maritime heritage and edible plants are all possibilities offered by the NRP. Many hiking trails, coastal paths and multiple bike paths invite you to walk. Small coves and some sandy beaches call for idleness, you can admire over the hours the change of landscapes, thanks to an exceptional light, specific to this corner of Brittany. The NRP also offers activities throughout the year: nautical outings, ornithological walks, exhibitions, nature camps, theme days, etc.

Within the Park, recognizable by their labels “Regional Natural Park values”, discover local products, directly from the producers of the Gulf of Morbihan and manufactured with respect for the environment. On the same principle of recognition, accommodation and catering points guarantee you a rental or a tasting where the welcome, listening and services offered are by people attached to their territory. Among the unmissable walks, let us mention the visit of the city of Vannes, a cruise in the Gulf to set sail for the Ile aux Moines and the Ile d’Arz, a journey to discover the beautiful megalithic monuments or participate in a guided tour by a PNR animator.

The island of Ilur, meanwhile, is accessible by its own means, guided tours by the coast guards are scheduled in season. This island belongs to the Conservatoire du littoral and is an example in terms of autonomy in resources, waste management, pastoralism, you can see for example sheep of local breed.
